Ingredients

Chex cereal mixture
  • 9 cups Chex cereal Use rice or corn Chex for the best crunchy texture.
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips or white melting wafers Whichever you choose, melt until completely smooth.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter Helps thin the coating for even coverage.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar Shakes onto the warm cereal to create the classic snowy coating.
  • 1 cup red M&Ms Toss in after the coating sets so they stay vivid.
  • 1 cup blue M&Ms Toss in after the coating sets so they stay bright.
  • 1 Red and blue star sprinkles Add after cooling for a clean, festive finish.

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Coat the Chex
  1. Measure Chex cereal into a very large bowl and set aside.
  2. Melt white chocolate chips or white melting wafers with unsalted butter in a microwave-safe bowl using 30-second intervals, stirring until completely smooth (aim for 30-second bursts until fully melted).
  3. Pour the melted white chocolate over the Chex and stir gently until every piece is evenly coated.
Powder and cool
  1. Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-lock bag, add powdered sugar, seal, and shake vigorously until all pieces are well coated.
  2. Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment-lined sheet pan and let cool for 30 minutes until set.
Finish and serve
  1. Transfer the cooled puppy chow to a large bowl and toss with red M&Ms, blue M&Ms, and red and blue star sprinkles so the mix looks evenly dotted.
  2. Serve in a big bowl or portion into individual bags for an easy party snack.

Notes

For the smoothest coating, keep stirring between microwave intervals until the chocolate looks glossy with no lumps. Store covered at room temperature for 2-3 days; for longer, refrigerate up to 5 days, noting the powdered coating may soften slightly. Freezing isn’t recommended because the candy coating and sprinkles can lose crispness. For a dairy-free swap, use dairy-free white chocolate chips or wafers and stick with a dairy-free butter alternative in the same amount.
